A lifetime of Service

Veteran Louis Boesel ,fought bravely during the Battle of Iwo Jima, alongside his Marine brethren who faced fierce opposition to secure the strategically important island. Now recognized as one of the bloodiest battles of the war, and the costliest in the vaunted history of the U.S. Marine Corps, the man who fought on the black sands of Iwo Jima did not initially regard it as the critical turning point it would later prove to be.

Hometown Hero: Beau Billeaudeaux

Growing up deep in the heart of Acadiana, also known as Cajun Country, Beau learned to speak French before he learned English—a skill he hoped might help him secure a choice assignment in the military. “I was hoping for beautiful French women and wine,” he recalls with a laugh. “Instead, I got Eskimos and icebergs. They told me, ‘You’re going to northern Greenland.’”
