What’s That Tune?
Cool off with Slice of Summer in Wait Park
Community: Slice of Summer
By Patti Jo Brooks, Contributing Writer
Celebrate Canby’s “Slice of Summer’’ music series every other Sunday this July and August in Wait Park. Gather with friends and neighbors to enjoy a free, live-music concert — a tradition that has been livening up Canby summer nights for over 40 years. The Slice of Summer series is supported by Canby Livability Coalition, a nonprofit organization dedicated to maintaining the quality of life in the community of Canby and aided through generous donations from local businesses. Come join the fun, grab a bite to eat and enjoy an exciting evening of great vibes.
The music lineup covers multiple genres with the promise of “something for everyone.” Pick your Sunday style, settle in and prepare to listen, rock or dance the night away! Kicking off the series July 14 is Willamette Valley Big Band “bringing the best of the big band era to life” with music from the ’30s, ’40s and ’50s. On July 28, Eli Howard and the Greater Good present their alternative country rock sound. On August 11, Bridgetown Get Down, a high energy six-piece band, will have you dancing in your seats. The final performance on August 25 has the Jesse James Band playing classic country and classic rock.
Music starts at 6 p.m. and goes until 8 p.m. with food and drink available from about 5:30 p.m. Food vendors Claudia’s Tamales, Papa Murphy’s, Kona Ice, TMK Creamery and Ragtime Treats will be serving up some popular fare to enjoy while you take in your favorite tunes. The concerts are free to attend and the park is always open, so come early for the best parking spots on the street and a prime place to set up. “Be sure to bring your blankets and chairs,” advises spokesperson Connie Ables, “that’s definitely recommended.” Sunscreen should make the list as well, since it’s typically warm and sunny.
The Slice of Summer organization extends its appreciation to these local businesses for making the 2024 series possible: DirectLink, Wilsonville Carpet & Tile, 4:8 Financial, Canby Kiwanis, Hope Village, Cutsforth’s Market, Wilcox Arredondo, Matt Olsen Insurance, Sprigg & Koehler Salon, Canby Eyecare, Canby Disposal and Community Advantage Magazine.
Slice of Summer Concert Series will be held at Wait Park in Canby 350 N. Grant St. For additional information, call 503-263-5263, email info@sliceofsummer.org or visit www.sliceofsummer.org.
