Earth Day Work Day, Taking Care of the Planet

Earth Day is an annual event celebrated worldwide on April 22, aimed at raising awareness and demonstrating support for environmental protection. In West Linn, a picturesque city nestled in the heart of our Oregon, Earth Day is not just a day to commemorate the planet we call home but also an opportunity to actively engage in conservation efforts through a unique event known as the Earth Day Work Day, sponsored by the city of West Linn’s Parks & Recreation.

The Earth Day Work Day event in West Linn is a community-driven initiative that embodies the spirit of Earth Day by encouraging residents to give back to the earth through various hands-on activities. From invasive species removal to beautification projects, trail maintenance, litter clean up, planting and more, participants are invited to roll up their sleeves and make a tangible impact on the local environment.

One of the key focuses of Earth Day Work Day is invasive species removal and trail maintenance. Invasive species pose a significant threat to native ecosystems by out-competing indigenous plants and disrupting the delicate balance of nature. Volunteers equipped with gloves, shovels, hard work and determination gather in designated areas to tackle invasive species such as English ivy, Himalayan blackberry and Scotch broom. By removing these invasive plants, participants help restore biodiversity and preserve the natural heritage of West Linn’s landscapes.

Beautification projects also play a crucial role in Earth Day Work Day. Volunteers come together to enhance public spaces, parks and trails, transforming them into vibrant sanctuaries for both wildlife and residents alike. From planting native flowers to installing birdhouses and creating pollinator gardens, these efforts not only improve the aesthetic appeal of the community but also provide vital habitats for local fauna and contribute to the overall health of the ecosystem.

Planting is another integral component of Earth Day Work Day. Native tree saplings, shrubs and wildflowers are carefully selected and strategically planted to bolster biodiversity, combat climate change and enhance the resilience of West Linn’s natural areas. Earth Day Work Day will take place at Willamette Park in West Linn on April 20, 9 a.m. to noon. Lunch will be provided between noon and 1 p.m. for all volunteers by the West Linn Lions.
